Laptop & Desktop Market Continues to Show Growth in 2020.
Laptop & Desktop Market Continues to Show Growth in 2020.
- Laptop and Desktop computers are an essential part of life which continue to show market growth, year on year. According to statista.com, the PC market in Europe continues to perform well, the total computing market shows a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.6%, reaching 105.2 billion Dollars in 2020, whilst the laptop and tablet market is expected to do even better, at a CAGR of 0.9%. Despite overall growth for PC’s in general, laptops seem to be outperforming desktops, the European desktop segment presents a slower rate of growth overall. The number of laptops or notebooks sold in Germany and Italy suggests a higher interest among consumers for notebooks and other portable devices.
- According to our partners Lenovo, their latest 2019 annual report in the PC and Smart Device (PCSD) Business showed that the market share gains in high-growth and premium segments, were an important driver for revenue growth and better profitability. PCSD enjoyed double digit revenue and shipment growth across the workstation, thin and light, visual and Gaming PC segments.
- According to the International Data Corporation (DCI) in the last quarter of 2019 Nearly 1 of every 4 PCs shipped during the quarter were from Lenovo or one of its subsidiaries as the company once again managed to hold the top position in the market. The company’s strong push in EMEA and Japan, along with a notable commercial presence, helped cement it as the leader during the quarter.
- Acer Group rounded out the top 5. The shortage of Intel processors impacted the company although it still continues to be one of the stronger players in the gaming and Chromebook segments.
- According to a new forecast from the Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, overall PCD shipments reached 407.7 million by the end of 2019, up 0.5% from 2018.
- Slate tablets are set to continue their downward trajectory as their lifecycles extend as companies shift their product portfolio towards detachable tablets and laptops, which has shown great success for the likes of Lenovo and Acer.
The Gaming PC segment is definitely one to watch out for this decade, with companies shifting towards a growing industry and sport, in E sports.
At Newtech, we represent this growing segment for PCs with Lenovo, Acer and Razer, the leading gaming brand for peripherals. At Newtech we are also very pleased to announce a contract with MSI Gaming Laptops, the first in Malta and the company will also be offering their entire latest product portfolio, technologies and gaming laptops range throughout 2020 including the flagship models, with the stock set to arrive in January. For years, MSI has devoted countless resources in R&D to both product and production. The goal is to create new innovative features, push for extreme performance, and maintain stability.
Business laptops have also made the shift to become durable and flexible, that can convert into tablets and use state of the art touch screen technology, which is part of the fantastic success shared by Lenovo and Acer.

Cybersecurity threats in 2020 in the EU
Cybersecurity threats in 2020 in the EU
Cybersecurity is a term coined to protect Information security systems from unathorised access and to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data. The process involves preventing, detecting, responding to and recovering from cyber incidents. EU policy declares that cybersecurity covers any unlawful activity involving the use of digital technologies in cyberspace which include cybercrimes such as, but not limited to:
- Launching computer phishing attacks.
- Malware.
- Non – cash payment fraud.
Such attacks can distinguish between systems and content, they can also be sources of misinformation to influence online debate and suspected electoral interference.
Cybersecurity threats can be classified according to what they do to data, disclosure, modification, destruction or denied access. As the attacks to information increase in sophistication, our defence mechanisms become less effective. Malware (malicious software) is designed to harm devices or networks. It can include viruses, trojans, ransomware, worms, adware and spyware.
Ransomware encrypts data, preventing users from accessing their files until a ransom is paid, typically in cryptocurrency, or an action is carried out. According to Europol, ransomware attacks dominate across the board, and the number of ransomware types has exploded over the past few years. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which make services or resources unavailable by flooding them with more requests than they can handle, are also on the rise, with one third of organisations facing this type of attack, as of the latest EU report written in 2017.
Users can be manipulated into unwittingly performing an action or disclosing confidential information. This can be used for data theft or cyberespionage, and is known as social engineering. There are different ways to achieve this, but a common method is phishing, where emails appearing to come from trusted sources trick users into revealing information or clicking on links that will infect devices with downloaded malware. More than half of Member States in the EU reported investigations into network attacks according to the latest EU findings.
Perhaps the most nefarious of threat types are advanced persistent threats (APTs). These are sophisticated attackers engaged in long-term monitoring and stealing of data, and sometimes harbouring destructive goals as well. The aim here is to stay under the radar without detection for as long as possible. APTs are often state-linked and targeted at especially sensitive sectors like technology, defence, and critical infrastructure. Cyberespionage is said to account for at least one-quarter of all cyber incidents and the majority of costs.
The impact of being poorly prepared for a cyber attack is difficult to analyse due to the lack of reliable data. However, The impact of cybercrime rose by five times from 2013 to 2017 and according to the latest cyber crime report in the EU, cyber insurance premiums are forecasted to grow from €3 billion in 2018 to €8.9 billion in 2020, which reflects this trend. A DDoS attack can cost as little as €15 a month to carry out, yet the losses suffered by the targeted business, including reputational damage, are considerably higher, in many cases into the high millions.
The global Wannacry ransomware and NotPetya wiper malware attacks in 2017 together affected more than 320 000 victims in around 150 countries. These incidents led to something of a global awakening of the threat posed by cyber-attacks, creating fresh momentum to bring cybersecurity into mainstream policy thinking. In addition, 86 % of EU citizens now believe the risk of falling victim to cybercrime is increasing.
“Regardless of how well-secured a network may appear to be, the hacker almost always finds a way in.” – Alan Wade, Former CIO at the Central Intelligence Agency
In this new era of threat, criminals have increasingly turned online to upscale their campaigns and outsmart their victims. It is a known fact that every major government has a dedicated cyber warfare programme, not only tasked to defend but also to conduct offensive operations endorsed by the likes of U.S government and the EU. As companies try to get their heads around the threath that is posed and justify investment, they are inclined to think of the cyber world in terms of new innovations, shared efficiencies and business growth but in many places world wide, the internet is perceived as a tool to advance political and economic interests. In this fast moving, ever evolving world, companies are trying to get to grip with reality and they must consider cyber security to be both a human and technological issue. Humans are a part of the equation as human behaviour is unpredictable and hard to control. In the majority of instances, organizations lack the understanding of the normal patterns of their own employees, let alone that of suppliers and third-party partners. Without this knowledge, the early indicators of threat are lost and not be discovered until a problem arises and money is lost.
The approach has to change.
In cyber security everything operates in real time, there are no predication mechanisms. The attacks of yesterday cannot foresee the attacks of tomorrow, leaving organisations unable to accurately assess how exposed their networks are, if they are not using the right tools. At Newtech we offer the best solutions in the market to prevent and detect such attacks. Which includes Darktrace, who are world leading in the autonomous response, utilising mathematics and AI to detect activity that is abnormal both internally and externally. Business leaders must demand change at both a human and technological level, to deliver a strategy that is just as adaptive as the threat is. While organisations will never be fully unhackable, cyber security is one of the best examples where artificial intelligence has proven its real-world impact in delivering much-needed change to our ability to fight cyber criminals. Darktrace power is not to second – guess the imagined threat but to fully learn patterns of normality within the whole context of your organisation to catch the quiet, unexpected threat lurking inside your systems. DarkTrace Launch Event
NewTech launched it’s partnership with Darktrace. The event took place at Zeri’s restaurant at the Portomaso Marina. In what was a successful launch, companies from various sectors showed up to learn more about the technology.
Darktrace’s Autonomous Response technology, Darktrace Antigena, uses Cyber AI to calculate the best action to take, in the shortest period of time, to effectively respond to a cyber-attack.
Because Darktrace’s Cyber AI learns the ‘self’ for your enterprise from scratch and has a highly evolved understanding of what’s normal, it can even respond to subtle threats that have never been seen before, but that could jeopardize key systems or data.

Like a digital antibody within the human immune system, Autonomous Response works by enforcing the ‘pattern of life’ of a threatening user or device, surgically neutralizing attacks and giving security teams critical time to catch up.
Autonomous Response AI technology by Darktrace is the first of its kind, and has been recognized by leading experts, including the Royal Academy of Engineers, as a “pioneering innovation”.
Blood Drive
According the Red Cross 1 in 4 of us will need a blood transfusion in our lifetime. Yet rates of blood donation are low, with only 10% of those who can give blood donate.
As part of the Demajo Group, a blood donation event was organised by NewTech where employees from all over the group convened at NewTech in Marsa taking donors to and from Iċ-ċentru ta’ l-Għotja tad-demm, G’Mangia.
Refreshments were served throughout the entire event at NewTech HQ.
What is Haemoglobin?
Haemoglobin is a protein in your body that contains iron and gives blood its red color. Hemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen from your lungs to nourish all of the tissues in your body.
1 in 4 of us will need a blood transfusion
What is Iron?
Iron is a part of hemoglobin and an essential mineral found in foods we eat. Iron helps your body make new red blood cells, and can help to replace those lost through blood donations.
Is it possible to have normal haemoglobin but low iron?
Yes. This is because in early iron deficiency there is often enough iron circulating in your red cells to keep your Hb level normal.
How is Blood Used?
Red Cell Uses
In the body red blood cells are essential to carry oxygen to all cells in all your tissues and organs. Red cell depletion occurs for any of the following scenarios:
- Red cells are lost from bleeding after injury or during surgery.
- The body loses the capacity to make enough of its own red cells.
- A genetic condition prevents proper red cell formation by the body.
- The body loses the ability to produce enough of its own red blood cells when undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.
Platelet Uses
As part of the blood transfusion process we separate out the platelets. These are very small cells that are essential for blood clotting. Platelets are used in the following scenarios:
- Patients who receive chemotherapy for cancer may need platelet transfusions to help their blood clot effectively.
- Heart surgery patients and victims of serious trauma can need platelet transfusions too.
Platelets have a short shelf life of five days. So keeping the supply going is a constant challenge.
Blood Plasma Uses
The third component of each blood donation is the plasma. This is the fluid in which the cells are suspended in the bloodstream. You have about three litres of it circulating through your blood vessels. It has proteins necessary for immunity and for blood clotting. Plasma can be stored frozen. Plasma is used in the following circumstances:
- Replace proteins where they are lost due to a large blood loss from trauma and during surgery.
- Plasma is used to make purified concentrates. For example patients often receive treatment with immunoglobulin concentrates or albumin made from plasma.
What are the effects of low iron levels?
The main adverse effect of blood donation is iron loss*, so blood donors can benefit from taking an iron supplement if they are unable to replenish their iron stores through diet alone. Donating blood removes iron from your body which is needed to help maintain strength and energy. The American Red Cross encourages all blood and platelet donors to learn how to maintain healthy iron levels and how blood donation impacts the level of iron in your body.
